That’s how political observers see the VP race in 2010 Trust the campaign veterans to look at events from unexpected perspectives. One strategist, who has been through several national campaigns, instantly shared with Newsbreak a comment when the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD party announced on Friday that former Optical Media Board chair Edu Manzano would be its vice presidential bet for 2010. “So it’s going to be Korina vs Loren vs Pinky now?” he said. The comment is in reference to Manzano’s known close friendship with ABS-CBN news talent Pinky Webb. Come to think of it, those running for vice president next year are either related one way or another to ABS-CBN news talents, if not talents themselves. Liberal Party’s Mar Roxas recently married long-time news anchor Korina Sanchez, prompting network executives to ask Sanchez to take a leave for the duration of the campaign and election. Another declared vice presidential aspirant, Senator Loren Legarda, is a former anchor and producer at ABS-CBN. In past elections, in fact, a common observation in the political circles was that Legarda and other former network talents (Noli de Castro, Gilber Remulla, and Mon Ilagan) were running under the “ABS-CBN Party.”
During the proclamation rally of Joseph Estrada and Jejomar Binay as standard bearers of the Partido ng Masang Pilipino weeks earlier, Newsbreak spotted Pinky Webb on the sidelines, where people sought her autograph. One fan was heard saying, “Ma’am pa-autograph, iboboto naman po namin si Sir Edu (Can we have your autograph, Ma’am? We’re voting for Sir Edu, anyway?).” At the time, Manzano was still rumored to be preparing for a senatorial campaign. Many were said to be taken by surprise when he later announced that he would be seeking a higher position. So will we still see his special friend in the newsroom, or on his campaign trail? The Inside Track is Newsbreak's intelligencer section. It features the latest buzz on juicy political and business goings on. |
