The estranged husband of Senator Loren Legarda on Saturday expressed support for her rumored presidential bid in 2010 saying she will make a "good president," especially for the Muslims in the Philippines. "I have affected her so much that I'm sure that if she was President, she would care for the interest and welfare of the Muslims," former Batangas Gov. Antonio Leviste said in a speech on Saturday at the Third International Conference of Muslim Leaders held at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City. "This is regardless of how she feels towards me," said Leviste in an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak. Leviste is a Muslim convert. He also carries the name Omar Al-Thani Leviste. He spoke on the good business opportunities for the Filipino Muslims today. Asked after his speech what would be Legarda's strongest asset as a President, a laughing Leviste said, "Don't ask me that." He also declined to answer when asked about the status of his marriage with Sen. Legarda. "I don't want to talk about my personal life," he replied. He clarified that he is unaware of Legarda's electoral plans. "I said if she was president, because of the way I affected her with Islam, she will take care of the Muslims." Leviste said he dreams that the Muslims in the Philippines will be empowered to become " financially-independent, politically-mature, and culturally-advanced." Leviste also said that he may go back to politics in Batangas. "I was tempted to in fact to go back to politics to clean Batangas of drug use. I'm worried about Batangas," he said. This plan highly depends on the court decision on his pending murder case for shooting his long-time aide Rafael delas Alas. Leviste claimed it was self-defense. Convicted persons are disqualified from running for public posts. The promulgation is scheduled on Wednesday, January 14. (abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak)
